alone

Yesterday while exploring Table Mountain National Park in South Africa I took this photo of an African penguin.

I think the photo emphasize the fragility of this vulnerable species. Africa`s only penguin have enemies like sharks, seals, and even orcas. But the most dangerous of all it enemies is homo sapiens.

Bandak_2 kamusflasjereke

Last week I attended a photoworkshop at Gulen diveresort with the English uw photographer Alex Mustard. We had some good dives and Mustard had some very good lectures that I learned a lot from. The photographers from all scandinavian countries on the workshop contributed to make this a really nice event. Good atmosphere, good beer  and nice weather.  I noticed some very talented photographers that I picked up some good tricks and ideas from. I`m hoping to meet this guys again and I will attend this workshops in the future.

I have started to upload  photos from the workshop in the galleries section here.

Nature's art

redfringe1 spiky2

Diving today in the Oslofjord.,we found these nice red fringed slugs (coryphella pellucida) entangled in each other.

We think they might be involved in some sort of nudie sex thing.

I  took  many photos, trying to capture the artistic impression the entangled red fringes created. I feel  I succeeded in capturing what I was looking for. The photos are not cropped.

I may try to put one of these on the wall if I find a place with matching red colors. Nature definitely creates its own unique art, it's up to us to recognize it...

The temperature is rising in the Oslo fjord and its the peak nudiebranch season of the year. I went diving with the Drøbak diveclub on a phototrip last Saturday and it was plenty of this weird creatures in the sea.

If you are interested in observing the colorful sea slugs, its the time to pull on the drysuit and enjoying the cold water of the fjord.

Easter diving

in the kelp polycera

During Easter I made a few dives on one of my favorite dive spots in Norway - Nærøy. In the top layer of the sea, the visibility was bad.  There was too much freshwater from the melting snow at the moment.

Below 8 meters it was great, and shortly the visibility will be good. The sea is starting to come to life, and as usual at this time of the year, there are a lot of sea slugs.

The most memorable dive was in the canyon at Nordøyan with the kelp forest above you. It was a really spectacular atmosphere, and I'm looking forward to diving this in better visibility. I have uploaded some of the photos in the gallery here.

Northern Sulawesi
Tuesday, 31 March 2009

About a week ago I returned from diving in Indonesia. On short notice we had the opportunity to visit the famous dive sites in Northern Sulawesi.

8 dive-days with critter hunting in Lembeh strait and driftdiving over the coral walls of Bunaken was way to short for a diving photographer. This area was absolutely fantastic, and I will defenitly return...

I have started to upload photos from the trip. Some of them can you see here.

Photo of the Month
Wednesday, 25 March 2009

Yesterday it was made public that my photo "freedom is an illusion" was the winner of  the "photo of the month "competition on Norway's biggest photo webpage: foto.no.

The quality of the 200 photos submitted to the competition was high, and it was especially rewarding to make it all the way to the top with a uwphoto on a website for mainly landbased photographers.  I hope the goldfish hostess will give it some rewarding delicious fish food in the next couple of days. After all, now it really is a gold-fish...

Get off my back
Sunday, 01 March 2009

We went  diving in the in the Oslofjord today. The water was freezing, in the top 10 meters. My computer said it was -1 degree Celsius.

Between 20-30 meters there were 7-8 degrees. It is more life to see in the fjord now. I took this photo of two hermit crabs doing, well what hermit crabs do.....

Gulen diving
Friday, 13 February 2009

On our trip to dive with the deep sea jellyfish-Periphylla, we stayed at Gulen diveresort.  We experienced cold, clear water and excellent diving conditions. We managed to do some wreck diving on the wrecks of Frankenwald and Ferndale/Parat, and we did some dives where we focused on the macro life as well. Se photos from this diving here.

Diving with Aliens
Thursday, 05 February 2009

Last week I had the opportunity to go to a fjord on the west coast of Norway to dive with the deep water jellyfish Periphylla periphylla. This jellyfish usually lives in the depths between 1000 and 7000 meters.

The jellyfish migrates towards the surface in the winter at night, and Lurefjorden north of Bergen is one of the few places in the world you can dive with them. The diving takes place at night, in free-water in the deepest part of the fjord.

It was an extraordinary experience to dive with this strange creatures. It felt like diving with aliens. Se more photos here

Ice cold beauty
Monday, 26 January 2009

We went diving in Drøbak in the Oslofjord a couple of weeks ago. The water was freezing cold. 2 C in the first 10 meters.

I took this closeups photo of a Dahlia anemone, and thought it was worth posting.

Saying hello!
Monday, 19 January 2009

While diving in the Maldives last year, this fellow came swimming right up to my face. He was curios of me and I could see how he was deciding if I as a natural part of his world. Obviously he found out I was not and swam slowly away.

A memorable moment. The picture is taken with 17 mm wide angle, and i have not decided if i like the photo best in color or black & white yet.

Wreck photos
Tuesday, 25 November 2008

I have recognized that some of my fellow divers are more interested in old rusted wrecks than the aquatic life. I have started to upload some wreck photos in a new section in the galleries. I have so far uploaded wreck photos from Norway. Se them here.

Pool pictures
Thursday, 30 October 2008

Last weekend i did a pool session, to take some photographs for the Nordic uw championship. The idea was to get an artistic touch to the pictures. The two models, Mathea and the gold fish did a great job. The gold fish is now swimming around in his bowl after the expedition of his life. You can see some of the pictures below.

Shark in Oslo
Sunday, 19 October 2008

We have heard rumors of several divers observing a small shark in the Oslofjord in the last couple of weeks, and decided to dive one of the locations they had been spotted. We were lucky and did not only find one, but two of this sharks on our dive today. The larger of the two was approx 80 cm long. In Norwegian the shark is called  "Småflekket rødhai". In English i found it is called  "Lesser-spotted dogfish". I brought a macro lens on the dive to day, and took some decent closeup photos of the nice little fellows.

After our success on the first dive finding the sharks we went out again two days later. We were lucky again, and found the sharks on the same spot. This time i took a serie of wide angle pictures of my friend Lill Haugen photographing close up photos of the sharks. More of this pictures will be publicised later.

Baby Seastar
Friday, 10 October 2008

I took this picture of a baby seastar while diving at Storsand in the Oslofjord. I manipulated the background to black and white to give it a more artistic impression.
